Franklin County cross country squads were tested last week with a total of three tournaments.

At Union County Sept. 14, the Wildcat boys placed second and girls fourth. Richmond won both ends. Seniors Adam Grant and Ben Maze have been going back and forth to lead the FC boys and it was Adam’s turn Tuesday; he took 5th with a season low of 18:56. Maze came in just behind in 6th, running a 19:00 flat. Junior Harmon Marshall is still chasing that career best, finishing 11th in 19:59.

Freshman Esther George continues to drop time. She obtained a personal best of 24:13. She battled it out for 5th with Union County’s Marissa Young, a junior, but just couldn’t hang on. Marissa passed her right before the 3-mile mark and maintained a 5-second lead at the finish. Esther finished a very respectable 6th place (24:13).

George then helped FC win the Lawrenceburg 3-way meet with South Dearborn Thursday, racing around the LHS course over a minute quicker than runner-up Cidney Clyde of the host school. Senior Katherine Apsley was not at her best but still wrapped up 5th place. The boys were just one point behind the host Tigers, 27-28. That was the same order individually, as Maze only trailed Grant Hensley at the finish. Grant took 4th and Marshall 5th. Brother Hunter Marshall sprinted down the chute to pass LHS’ Tanner Fox for 7th place.

At the larger and hotter South Dearborn Invitational Saturday at Moores Hill Elementary, FC’s teams were both 7th.

Maze was the Cats top finisher, placing 15th. His time of 18:27 is closing in on his career best of 18:02. Grant was 25th out of 55 runners in his division; his time of 18:58 is inching lower toward his career mark of 18:52. The Marshalls are seeking the 19-minute range consistently, though Harmon was at 20 minutes flat. Senior Eric Schwab did well to get a personal mark of 21:32. This included a phenomenal finish when he passed Lawrenceburg’s Ashton Rasnake down the stretch. Soph Owen Darwish also had a new career mark, running 23:29.

Apsley completed a personal best at SD, finishing strong in 25:40. George battled the heat to lead FC once again.

The Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference meet is Saturday morning in Batesville, starting at 9:30 a.m.
