Stirn is conference MVP

The FC senior defeated Rushville’s Marlin Hershberger in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to capture the No. 1 singles flight and earn the title of MVP.
The Rushville Lions look to continue their success during the 2021 tennis season. They will play in the Connersville sectional this week along with Franklin County and Oldenburg Academy.
The Lions finished the regular season with a 16-1 record and went 7-0 in conference matchups. The first round began on Thursday, Sept. 23.
Stirn opened by shutting out Greensburg’s Bryce Stringer and followed up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Connersville’s Gage Brown. FC’s Nick Wendel lost at 2 singles to CHS’ Riley Brannon (6-2, 6-3) and Garrett Kuntz was bested at 3 singles by Greensburg’s Jeter Edwards (6-1, 6-0). Avery Harrison and Trevor Bruns fell to eventual champs Dustin McCarrell and Logan Shipley of CHS (6-1, 6-0). Ty Bruns and Avery Crouch were shut out 6-0, 6-0 by Justin Adkins and Reece Beaver of Greensburg at the 2 doubles position.
In the second round on Saturday, Hershberger earned All-EIAC honors when he defeated Batesville’s Cael Rahe 6-1, 6-2. Hershberger’s only loss was to Stirn. Also earning All-EIAC for RCHS were Smith and Jackman. Jackman won the championship in number three singles with a three-set victory, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(11), over Connersville’s James Williams. Smith won decisive victories over Lawrenceburg’s Logan Bruner 6-0, 6-0 and Batesville’s Jaden Smith 6-4, 6-0 to earn a spot on the all-conference team. McCarrell/Shipley beat Cole Pride and Jackson Tracy in 1 doubles. Luke Morris and Kolton DeBoard of CHS won their flight over BHS’ Alec Bunselmeier and Sam Johnson.
Connersville faces Rushville Thursday at Connersville High while FC takes on Oldenburg Academy. Both matches start at 5 p.m. The championship is Saturday morning.
