Greene & Hill lead Lady Pats to 10-0 win over Tigers

By Vivian Risch-

The Union County Lady Patriots didn’t let the weatherman interfere with their quest to win a softball game on the road at Hagerstown. While fans in the stands shivered under blankets and winter coats, the Lady Pats went about blasting the Lady Tigers, 10-0.

UC scored a run in the second and third innings, but went three up and three down in the fourth inning.   Then in the fifth inning, Shelby Hill warmed up the bases with home runs – not one but two – a 3-run homer over the right field fence in the fifth inning and a 3-run homer that cleared the left field fence in  the sixth.

Here is the rest of the action-filled fifth and sixth innings:

UC opened the fifth inning with a groundout. Annalea Adams reached first on an error and Sophia Knock was intentionally walked, followed by Hill. The UC first baseman tagged the fourth pitch to the plate that easily cleared the fence in right field.

The Lady Pats’ sixth inning  was a repeat of the fifth. With one out, Brooke Fields singled to right field, Ally Gray drew a walk and Adams’ 3-base hit to centerfield to score both runners. Knock stood waiting nearby, positioned herself in the batters box long enough for Hagerstown to give the intentional walk signal a second time. Hill, calm and collected in the batter’s box, sent the fourth pitch over the fence in left field for another three-run home run and a total of six RBI.

So with one out and five runs scored, the Tigers changed pitchers and retired the remaining two UC batters.

Lady Patriots’ pitcher Chloe Greene faced 24 total batters, but no more than four in any inning. Greene walked two, struck out 10 and gave up zero runs in six innings.

It was cold and windy with a sprinkling of rain throughout the game. The Lady Patriots didn’t care and neither did their fans. Good job UC!
