The Oldenburg Academy Twisters went head-to-head with Union County through six-plus innings last Thursday before the Patriots pulled off a 7-6 victory in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out and the score tied at 4, the Twisters scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead.
But the Patriots were far from finished. Mason Stewart drew a walk and Devyn Shepherd singled down the third base line to start. A fielder’s choice stopped Shepherd short of second base, a pair of singles (Grady Swafford, Josh Klein) and stolen bases put UC ahead, 7-6, for the win.
Oldenburg started strong with a 3-0 lead after two innings, but failed to keep the UC batters in check. Six Patriots went to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and scored two runs including Ridenour’s left-center field home run.
Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings but action returned in the sixth and seventh innings with the Patriots edging out Oldenburg, 7-6.
Ridenour started on the mound for the Patriots and allowed four hits, three runs, with four strikeouts and a walk in two innings.
Eric Burdine emerged as the winning pitcher, giving up two hits, two runs and a strikeout in one inning. Mason Stewart and Mathew Wooley helped to close out the game in relief.
