BROOKVILLE – A no-doubt home run by Jacob Meer to open the top of the sixth inning gave visiting Batesville what would become a 5-4 victory over host Franklin County last Tuesday.
The Wildcats were coming off an excellent inning in which they batted around and knotted the game at four apiece, but Meer found an Adam Daugherty offering to his liking and sent it sailing over the left-field fence to help Batesville stay unbeaten in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference.
A scoreless pitcher's duel after three, the Bulldogs finally got to Daugherty in the top of four with a pair of runs before adding two more in the first half of the fifth.
With little luck against starter Jack Grunkemeyer through the first four attempts, FC hit the jackpot in its fifth try.
Austin Short was hit by a pitch and Remington Watters replaced him at first after a fielder's choice to the left side. Turning the lineup over to leadoff hitter Trevor Moizuk with one out, the junior singled into center field to put two runners on. Senior outfielder Kristian Prows then drilled a hit to the right-center gap that scored Watters and the opportunistic Moizuk from first.
After Grunkemeyer walked Brant Ertel, coach Justin Tucker elected to pull his big righthander in favor of Dime Adams. Adams promptly surrendered a base on balls to catcher Xander Rodriguez to load the bases. Daugherty then singled sharply to left to score Prows and Ertel close on his heels. Adams limited further damage in the stanza by catching Chase Burton looking and Hunter Geis swinging.
Following the Meer homer, Daugherty pitched around a two-out single and FC again took cuts off Adams. The Bulldog righty would strike out the side – part of his seven strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings – though giving up a single to left by Watters and a walk to Prows. A shot to left by Ertel had the distance for a 3-run job but landed just wide of the foul line.
Geis came on in the seventh for coach Derek Stang's squad and worked around a single by leadoff Charlie Schebler, fanning both catcher Zach Wade and cleanup hitter Travis Lecher.
With one more chance in the last of the seventh, FC started with a flyout and strikeout. Burton slapped a single to left but Adams won a duel with Geis by striking out the FC senior to end the game.
Daugherty allowed just a Grunkemeyer double through Batesville's first 11 batters. Third baseman Max Baumer singled to right with one out in the fourth and Lecher did likewise to left. A balk sent runners to second and third. One out later, Grunkemeyer doubled for the second straight at-bat as his missile to center got over the head of the hustling Geis.
Grunkemeyer allowed two runners to reach in the fourth before whiffing Burton and Geis in succession to end the threat.
The fifth was also productive for the visitors. Daugherty earned one of his strikeouts ahead of No. 9 batter Willy Sherwood legging out a base hit to the right side, moving to second on an errant pickoff attempt, swiping third and scoring on a wild pitch. Prows had a web gem against Schebler, diving back to his left to snag the junior's shot to left field. Wade was then hit by a pitch and gave way to courtesy runner Brady Hornberger. Baumer made it 4-0 on a double to right.
Adams earned the win for BHS and Daugherty took the loss. Daugherty also had two of FC's six hits.
Vs. Hagerstown (April 22)
FC scored four times in the third, then pulled ahead with two more in the fifth to win 7-5 over the Tigers at Jim Hughes Field. Daugherty (3 RBI, double), Burton and Rodriguez (double) each had 2 hits. Burton and Watters stole a base each. Eli Butt was winning pitcher while JD Stokes and Watters also threw.
At Daleville (April 23)
The Cats enjoyed a big-time doubleheader sweep against the Broncos, winning 19-4 and 21-0.
In game 1, Daugherty (double, homer) had 4 hits and 2 RBI while Ertel (double) added 4 hits and 4 RBI. Rodriguez went for 4 RBI. Moizuk (double) added 2 RBI. Butt belted a double. Ertel swiped 3 bags while Westerfeld and Prows had 2 each. Moizuk was the 5-inning winner, fanning 7.
Game 2 saw FC explode for innings of 11 and 8 runs to end things early. Watters, Daugherty and Rodriguez each had 2 knocks. Daugherty continued his fire day with two round trippers and 5 RBI. Burton and Rodriguez also homered. Prows tripled; Butt and Ben Becker doubled. Burton and Daugherty had pilfers. Burton won on the mound and Avery Harrison pitched.
