Indiana Academic Super Bowl

Union County High School and 14 other area schools participated in the Indiana Academic Super Bowl Regional (IASBR) at Richmond High School on April 19.
“Unfortunately, we are not going to state this year for academics,” UC Academic Coordinator Megan Worcester reported the following day.
The 14 schools entered in the Regional were divided into four classes. Union County is in Class 3 along with Centerville, Northeastern, Wapahani and Winchester.
All schools competed in Math, English, Science, Fine Arts, Social Studies and the Interdisciplinary round. Scores from across the state were tabulated to determine which schools scored the highest.
Initially, UC did not have a math team, but when the math round was seated, two seats were filled...Celeste Pence and Kenzie Hunter, both from the sophomore class and both without previous math academic experience!
So how did this Team of Two do? Great! They stunned their coaches and peers with second-place in Class 3 Math!
Although they gained a huge following during the math round and applause and many compliments upon returning to their seats with peers and coaches, their score was not high enough to send them to the Indiana Academic Super Bowl at Purdue University on May 7.
A second-place finish for a pair of sophomores who only studied math on the bus ride from Liberty to Richmond and decided to put their study time to work is something to cherish and perhaps prepare for next year!
“I had no idea what it would be like,” Celeste said. “But I’m so proud.” And rightfully so.
Congratulations young ladies. You’ve made your school and community proud!
