Lady Pats split double header beat SD 1-0 in nine, fall to #1 in state

Union County played 16 innings of softball in a doubleheader last Saturday with South Dearborn and Yorktown.
The Lady Patriots defeated South Dearborn, 1-0 in nine innings in the morning game.
“We got the first one,” UC coach Scott Gray said. We need to play competition like this.”
Yorktown won the second game, 7-0, in seven innings.
“We need to play games like this,” Gray said. “That’s why we brought two teams into this.”
UC pitcher Bailey Mathews struck out the first SD batter in the first inning and struck out the final batter in the ninth inning. The sophomore hurler finished with 9 strikeouts and walked only two.
With one out in the first inning, SD put their first runner on base when outfielder Kori Cornett hit a double and moved to third before the Lady Pats retired the side.
“Pitching and catching did an outstanding job today,” Gray said. “They did great work together.” Emma Wooley was behind the plate in the first game.
UC loaded the bases in the first inning with SD and put runners on in every inning without anyone completing the circle until the ninth inning.
Ninth inning – Annalea Adams singled to deep center field and stole a base. Then with two outs and Adams on third, Shelby Hill stepped into the batter’s box. Waiting for the right pitch, Hill hit the 3-1 pitch to the corner in right field to easily score Adams and was safe on first. Game over and UC celebrated a 1-0 win over South Dearborn in 9 innings.
Union County shuffled its lineup, put Chloe Greene on the mound with Hill catching. Mathews moved to first base and Bri Durham in left field.
Yorktown started the second game on a high note – a first inning run, another in the third, two in the fifth and three in the seventh. All totaled, the Lady Tigers scored 7 runs on 6 hits. Senior pitcher Alanah Jones struck out 14 and walked one.
Three Lady Patriots became hitters – Adams (2b), Hill, Greene.
“We played well, just got beat by a better team,” Gray said. “Yorktown is #1 in the state.”
The 7-0 win improved the Lady Tigers’ season record to 7-1.Union County is 10-2.
Next Opponents
After a game at Lawrenceburg and another at Richmond this week (Tues. and Wed.), Union County will host Preble Shawnee Friday, April 29, and travel to Monroe Central and Tri on May 2 and 3.
