Smokin’ on the water weekend

The Liberty Lions Club started the Smokin' on the Water BBQ festival in 2008. Fourteen years later, they are now a staple on the Kansas City Barbeque Society tournament schedule. The first weekend in May brings World Champion competitors to the lakeside village of Dunlapsville to compete for a cash prize and bragging rights. Three former world champs, two of which have won multiple times, will be entered in this weekend's contest.
The annual event has been put on throughout the past decade and a half with the help of local volunteers. Carl Sharp was a major part in the creation of the Smokin’ on the Water festival. According to Sharp, “Members from the Lions Club, the Troop 40 Boy Scouts, the Union County Youth Soccer Club, and many other residents just wishing to donate their time have helped the event succeed.”
The usual vendors will be on hand selling their homemade crafts. That includes woodworking, leather works, and other crafts. Music will be played through the event which a DJ on hand. The Joy River Band will be taking the stage Saturday and Sunday at 1pm, and the Car, Truck, Tractor, and Motorcycle show will be going on with judging starting at 12:30 pm on Sunday.
Sharp stated the Lions Club Car Show will feature new categories this year. “The top street rod will win The Best Street Rod Award in memory of Rich Young. There will be a Young Guns award for up-and-coming entrants, and a Pedal Car award has been added,” Sharp said. Past show entrants, according to Sharp, have run the gamut. “We had entrants in the past that have included Model T's, Stagecoaches, and a five-ton Military truck.” A total of 44 awards will be handed out at the show.
Church services will be available at 10 am on Sunday and the Crosspointe Biker Church will be selling ice cream. The events will close out Sunday with the food judging and awards ceremony around 4pm.
The kids will have plenty to do with face painting, balloons, and the SCA Kids Contest, and the Circle D Rangers will be putting on a show. Saturday at 9am the Craft Fair, food booths, merchandise vendors, and carnival will be open. The SCA Awards ceremony will be Saturday at 7pm. The KCBS judging begins at noon on Sunday.
