Union County picked up its first Tri-Eastern Conference volleyball win last week before the hometown crowd with a straight set (3-0) win over Union City.

 “The girls were ready to win big after facing strong competition last weekend,” UC coach Allison Kassens said. 

UC competed in the Bishop Chatard Invitational last Saturday and came up empty  against Chatard (0-3), Delta (0-3) and Noblesville (0-3), but gained much experience against the big Indianapolis schools. 

“We need competition like Saturday to make up better and take us where we want to go,” Kassens said.

The roles were reversed when the Lady Indians visited. Total numbers tell the story...Kills-UCounty 30, UCity 6. Aces-UCounty-17, UCity-3. Blocks-UCounty 0-UCity 2. Digs-UCounty 40-UCity 45. Assists-UCounty 28, UCity 6. The Lady Pats won the first set 25-15 and Union City’s point total fell each set thereafter, 25-10 and 25-6.

Union County will play the next four matches on the road - at Winchester, Sept. 1, Richmond Sept. 6, Lincoln Sept. 8, Lawrenceburg Sept. 12. The Lady Pats return home, Sept. 15 to host Northeastern.

Katie McCashland (1 ace, 5 digs), Carly McCashland (3 aces, 2 dig, 1 assist), Brooke Fields (13 digs, 1 assist), Hanna Vaughn (8 kills, 7 digs). Autumn Cantrell (1 dig), Elyse Peters (9 kills, 4 aces, 3 digs), Whitney King (6kill, 1 dig), Bailey Mathews (2 kills, 1 dig), Shelby Hill (3 aces, 25 assists).

JV: Union County defeated Union City 25-19, 25-12.

Lady Pats split with Park Tudor, Speedway
It was a win/lose weekend for the Union County volleyball team. The Lady Patriots defeated Speedway, 3-1, but fell short of the undefeated Park Tudor Lady Panthers 3-0.
Against Speedway, UC won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-15. The Lady Spark Plugs came back to win the third set, 25-18 but trailed Union County, 25-21, at the end of the fourth set.
Hitters Chloe Greene, Elyse Peters, Hanna Vaughn, Autumn Cantrell and Hannah Wulf paced the Lady Pats with 36 total hits in the match - Greene 14, Peters 11, Vaughn 7, Cantrell 3, Wulf 1.
Peters and Wulf made one block each. 
Kasey Lang and Peters both served 4 aces to top the aces  chart.  Brooke Fields and Greene served 2 aces each and McCashland had one.
The Lady Pats had 56 total digs with 11 UC players contributing to the point total. Double digit “diggers” were Shelby Hill (13) and Carly McCashland (10).
Park Tudor held the Lady Patriots in three sets – 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17.

Weekend tournament action is at the Noblesville Invitational Saturday, Sept. 10.
