The Union County boys basketball team suffered a 10-point, turnover-infested loss to Randolph Southern last week at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium.

“Twenty-one turnovers – not going to beat anybody with 21 turnovers,” UC head coach Bobby Jones began. “Didn’t do a very good job of attacking the basket.”

UC trailed by two after the first quarter but battled back to take a 13-13 tie score into the locker room at half-time.

While offense kept pace in the first half, UC struggled to contain Southern’s Joe Burke. The 6’7” senior scored 24 points with 14 points coming in the second half. He also hauled in 9 rebounds.

“We didn’t box the big kid out very well,” Jones said. “And when they threw a different defense at us, we hesitated and turned the ball over.”
Southern guard Elijah Allen and Burke both finished with 24 points.

“They have a couple of good guards that handle the ball well and they hit their shots early that kind of put us on our heels trying to play catch-up,” Jones said. “We scored 63 points with 21 turnovers and didn’t run any offense. But our kids are  playing hard and keep good attitudes.”

Southern outscored the Patriots, 24-16 in the third quarter before UC came back to match them, 22-22, in the final eight minutes.

“You have to put yourself in position to win. That’s a process and we are heading in the right direction,” Jones said. “These guys will come back tomorrow eager to get it done. We’re playing hard.”

Union County scoring leaders were Brad Meadows with 19 points and Gavin Davis with 10.
