Lady Patriots win 31-15 TEC game at Hagerstown

Last week was Hagerstown week when the UC girls and boys basketball teams played two days apart. The girls matchup was varsity only on Wednesday.

The boys went at it Friday night.

The Lady Patriots’ 31 points out-distanced the Lady Tigers, 31-15.

The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Tigers were able to light up the scoreboard and stood out in front, 6-3 at the end of the first quarter.

“We didn’t execute offensively,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Shelby Hill was open all over the court all night.”

The Lady Patriots’ offense picked up in the second quarter, scoring 17 points and allowing the Lady Tigers one-of-two from the free throw line.

Hagerstown came back after halftime with a dozen points and UC struggled to make a basket. Peityn Gillman stepped up with a 3-pointer midway through the third period.

Scoring took a dive in the final eight minutes to a total of eight points (UC 5 and Hagerstown 3).

“We should have won this game easy,” Gray said. “We’ve got to get better.”

Union County finished the game with 12 field goals with five coming from behind the 3-point arc.

“We did not play well,”  Gray said. “But we will get there.”

Senior center Hill was the game’s leading scorer with 12 points in three quarters. She also hauled in six rebounds.

Hagerstown senior Delaney Oliger had six points for the Lady Tigers.
