Lady Patriots win over South Decatur

“Good game. All wins are good,” UC coach Scott Gray said following the Lady Patriots’ win over the South Decatur Lady Cougars. The 39-27 victory at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium boosts UC’s season record to 5-4. South Decatur dropped to 3-8.
The Lady Pats came out strong in the first half scoring 10 points in the first quarter, 9 in the second to SD’s 11 points in the first half.
“We started off okay and then came out in the third quarter, decided not to score, and left a goose egg,” Gray said. “Our inability to score at a high level makes every game we play close.”
Although UC was scoreless in the third period, the Lady Pats’ defense stayed firm allowing SD five points to give UC a 19-16 edge into the fourth quarter.
“Katie McCashland was fantastic in the fourth quarter,” Gray said. “She scored 9 in the fourth quarter, including two 3-point plays the old-fashioned way. She covered our backs with her effort.”
McCashland and the Lady Pats put 20 points on the scoreboard in the last quarter to South Decatur’s 11.
Lady Cougar sophomore Kiley Best was the game’s leading scorer with 14 points. Senior Shelby Hill’s 10 points led Union County.
