The Union County Patriots took the wind out of the Oldenburg Twisters in the 46-31 win this week.

Oldenburg led (2-0) briefly at the start but failed to keep pace in the first quarter and the following three quarters.

The Patriots held a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and were up 20-11 at halftime.

“Our defense was good and several guys stepped on offense, but we were short on free throws,” UC coach Bobby Jones said.

Gavin Davis had 11 points and the only Pat to finish in double figures. Juniors Kyle Sams and Logan Harris came off the bench to contribute 9 and 8 points, respectively, to the UC win.

“I like to score when the clock is stopped and free throws are the way to do it,” Jones said. “Our free throw percentage was 70 tonight (19 of 27). I think we will have more morning practices to work on free throw shooting.”

In the fourth quarter, UC was awarded 16 freebies and made eight.

After the slow first quarter,  the Patriots scored in double figures in the second (14), third (11) and fourth quarters (15).

Juniors Conner Miles and Jacob Cornelius led the Twisters with 12 each.

“They (Oldenburg) are an athletic and young team,” Jones said. “They will be a good team in a couple of years.”

Oldenburg’s roster listed eight varsity players...two seniors, two juniors and four sophomores. The reserve Twisters also had eight players... 2 juniors, 2 sophomores and four freshmen.
