Hagerstown hands Patriots 26-7 setback

Hagerstown’s Homecoming last week drew a big crowd to see the halftime introduction of the king and queen court and cheer the Tigers to a 26-7 Tri-Eastern Conference win over Union County. Big crowd? The hometown folks came prepared with lawn chairs and picked their favorite spots in the end zone near the concession stand.

“It’s that time of the season,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said. “We will probably play at more senior night and homecoming games these last games of the season.”

The Tigers won the pre-game coin toss and deferred to UC, who elected to receive. All well and good except Hagerstown jump-started the Pats with a fumble recovery on UC’s first play and a touchdown three plays later.

“We made a mistake and they took advantage,” Hofmann said. “We responded well and felt like we were right there.”

Down by a TD and PAT kick, the Patriots dug in. Ten plays and a pair of first downs later, sophomore Dustin Shepherd hauled in Michael Eversole’s pass at the 5-yard line and scampered into the end zone. The 35-yard passing TD and Rhett Hollen’s PAT kick tied the score at 7-7.

Ty Elleman’s kickoff found Tiger receivers battling UC defenders quick on the scene and fighting for possession. UC came up with the ball,  only to turn it back over to the Tigers on fourth down and 10.

“When we have opportunities, we’ve got to make sure we carry through,” Hofmann said. “We just didn’t.”

Hagerstown senior Mason Romack had 109 yards rushing and scored 3 touchdowns. “He is a good player with lots of experience,” Hofmann said. The Hagerstown senior finished with 109 rushing yards, 63 yards receiving.
