Twisters, Brave caught in Wildcat storm

By Will Fehlinger-

On paper, last Wednesday's intra-county matchup between visiting Oldenburg Academy and Franklin County – winners of their previous 11 games – was a mismatch.

Turns out, it also was one on the court.

After a nice 5-4 start for the Twisters led to a Wildcat timeout at 4:04 of the opening quarter, the hosts outscored OA 49-21 the rest of the way to win 53-26 – a clean dozen straight for coach Mark Foster's squad.

Senior Nick Folop hit two baskets – a deuce and a trey – to put OA up early but those would be the only makes for the guests in the frame. The Cats put together a 10-0 swing to close the period, capped by junior Brant Ertel's and-one opportunity with just a half-second on the clock; his free throw made it 14-5.

The Twisters were more productive offensively in the next eight minutes, though by halftime OA had fallen into a deeper hole at 27-13.

Senior Frank Moorman halved the deficit on the first possession of period two. FC responded with sophomore Eli Butt's triple from the corner and a putback for senior Chad Cox. Oldenburg's Abe Streator scored in the low post, but coach Gary Moorman called timeout at 21-9 following a pair of Cox foul shots.

A lay-in by sophomore Jacob Cornelius would give OA its narrowest margin the remainder of the night. Streator answered Wildcat senior Bridger Bolos' baseline move at the 1:07 mark before a steal and conversion by Austin Hill gave FC its 14-point lead at intermission.

The third quarter mirrored the first from a Twister standpoint. Looking for the right shots against the Wildcat man-to-man, OA got Folop's second three of the game and two more by Folop off a Cornelius assist. Oldenburg's next point, however, would be nine minutes away.

At 29-18, the Wildcats exploded for 19 unanswered points and a commanding 30-point lead; Moorman eschewed additional timeouts, opting to let his guys play on.

Part of the big run were five 3-point combinations by the Wildcats – three shots from beyond the arc and two successful 3-point plays. Ertel scored nine of his game-best 15 points during the binge.

Senior CJ Grote's two charity shots finally halted things with 5:02 left in the contest, part of OA's 8-5 finish.

Folop ended with a dozen points, as did Cox; big man JD Stokes added 11 points for the home team.

Oldenburg welcomes Triton Central to the Feldhaus Saturday afternoon.
