The Union County wrestling team of seven whizzed through the IHSAA Wrestling Sectional at South Dearborn High School last week to qualify for the IHSAA Regional round at Richmond High School this Saturday.

All seven Patriots drew byes in the opening round. Six Patriots were seeded at sectional. All seven finished fourth or higher in their respective weight classes.

“Everybody met and/or exceeded their seeds and met my expectations,” UC coach AJ Bryson said. “It’s nice to be surprised in nice ways.”

Carson Whitley was seeded second. The 113-pounder finished undefeated at the top of the bracket in first place.

#1 Seed Jesus Aquino-Morales at 120 pounds won a match by pin and won an 11-5 decision to win the championship match.

Freshman Tanner Burns wrestled four matches at 132 pounds to finish in fourth place.

Evan Wolf was seeded second at 145 pounds and stood second on the podium at awards time.

Jordan Takara was seeded second in the 152-pound bracket of 10 entries. He finished 1-1 and second place.

Heavyweight Nathan Reffitt was a third seed at 285 pounds. He pinned two opponents to reach the championship match and second place at the awards program.

Lightweight Cal Rudnick was not seeded in the 106-pound bracket of nine entries. The UC freshman wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish and a trip to the IHSAA Regional at Richmond. The top four places in each weight class at regional advance to the New Castle Semi-State Saturday, Feb. 12.

“There were no disappointments today,” Bryson said. “Somehow they are all wrestling at regional next week.”

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at the Richmond Regional at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.
