Lady Patriots basketball– UC’s second half gets the job done

By Vivian Risch-

The Union County Lady Patriots closed out the regular season last week with a whopping 51-32 Tri-Eastern Conference win over the Centerville Lady Bulldogs. The UC girls closed out the season 10-8 and 4-4 TEC record.

A good win for the Lady Patriots before heading into sectional and game to remember for senior Faith Richardson.

The 5’7” Union County forward scores, rebounds, is aggressive, and keeps tabs on who is in the area under the basket. And she was all of those things and more in this 51-32 win over Centerville.

Late in the game, Richardson scored 10-of-16 points in the fourth quarter and ended with 30 points, a career high score. The bench went wild and so did coach Scott Gray, who sent a sub in so he could personally congratulate the game’s highest scorer.

Congratulations Faith!

Back to the game

UC led at the end of each quarter stop; the second half was the game-winner.
“We didn’t rebound well in the first half but our defense in the second half did a better job,” UC varsity assistant coach Todd Gray said.

Overall, Centerville out-rebounded Union County by one, 26-25, but committed the same number of turnovers, caused in part by UC steals. The Lady Pats had 14 turnovers.

“Faith had a nice game tonight,” Gray said. “And Brooke Fields played well and made several assists and steals.

JV wins in two quarters
Union County won the junior varsity game, 25-7, in two quarters, due to low numbers of players.

Sectional is in progress
IHSAA Girls Basketball Sectional 41 at Shenandoah began Tuesday of this week - too late to make this week’s Herald.

“I think the sectional draw is as balanced as it could have been,” Gray said. “Shenandoah and Northeastern are playing their best ball all year. Then probably we come in next, then Hagerstown. With that said, it is probably the best it could be. We will have to win three games to win it.”
