AURORA – The Franklin County wrestlers picked up a runner-up finish at the 2022 sectional hosted by South Dearborn Saturday. East Central was the clear winner, garnering 253.5 points and half the individual weight class titles, but FC was next at 164. Coach Doug Deters will be sending six wrestlers on to the state's next round, the Richmond Regional Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Wildcats had one champion on the day – freshman Colin Troyer (27-3) at 106 pounds. Troyer had a bye and forfeit into the semifinals, where he matched up with Zakk Reed of Rushville. The youngster pinned the Lion midway through the first period and took even less time in pinning Greensburg's Tristan Smith in the championship.

Senior Andrew Merritt (29-6) wrestled to runner-up in the 132 class. Merritt pinned Lawrenceburg's Ben Heath in the second period, then repeated that against Union County's Tanner Burns in the semifinals. SD's Isaiah Otto edged Merritt in the finals, 3-1.

Taking third at 160 was sophomore Breck Bohman, whose record stands at 24-13. Bohman pinned Connersville's Wesley Wise before coming up short of Rushville's Matthew Komlanc 6-3. The soph pinned SD's Corbin Cassidy in the wrestlebacks and recorded an 8-0 major decision over Drake Rorabacher of Lawrenceburg.

Freshman Cole Freese (26-9) also placed third at 113. Freese pinned Connersville's Aiden Maze in the second period but succumbed to class champ Carson Whitley of Union County in the semifinals. He then pinned SD's Jacob Fischer in the second period and pinned EC's Jaxon Carr late in the first period to get bronze.

Junior Lendon Sizemore (21-13) advanced by placing fourth at 220. Sizemore pinned Batesville's Christian Garcia in the first period before getting pinned by eventual champ Brayden Rouse of EC. He pinned Milan's Kyle Gotts in the consolation bracket; Connersville's Levi DeGroat pinned Sizemore in the 3rd-place bout.

Freshman Avery Crouch (21-13) will make his regional debut after taking the fourth spot Saturday. In the 126-lb. class, Crouch pinned LHS' Seth Merkel in the second period to reach the semis. Crouch quickly fell to unbeaten Blake Wolf of EC ahead of a forfeit win. Kian Nash defeated the Wildcat frosh, 6-2, in the consolation match.

Senior Ben Maze's (24-15) career ended with fifth place at 138. Maze was decisioned 6-0 by LHS' Brayden Tudor. Maze promptly pinned CHS' Gavin McGuire but lost 10-3 to Greensburg's Preston Merritt. He needed just 13 seconds to pin Rushville's Connor Hodson.

Eric Schwab (23-11) closed his FC career with fifth at 182. Schwab pinned BHS' Andrew Jones, then was pinned by CHS' Orlan Foster. He lost 5-3 to Greensburg's Hayden Butz before defeating Jones 5-4.

Soph Roger Zurborg (19-8) just missed out, placing fifth at 120. He lost by 15-5 major decision to LHS' Javier Payne before getting a forfeit. Rushville's Tuff Tackett pinned Zurborg, who then pinned EC's Ben Peterson.

Junior Hayden Newell was fifth at 170. Newell pinned Rushville's Alan Busche. In the semis, he battled EC's Brayden Huber deep into the third period before getting pinned. Newell (25-10) lost 5-1 to CHS' Jarred Barrett, then pinned Busche again.

Junior Jadon Napier (13-8) was also fifth, wrestling at 195. SD's Andrew Kemper pinned the Wildcat; Napier then won a forfeit, lost due to injury to Batesville's Chase Hamilton and took a forfeit win in the 5th-place bout.
Freshman Karter Smith (11-15) competed at 152, placing sixth. He was pinned by Cameron Gilb of Milan before pinning Jahmel Carter of Connersville. Smith was pinned by Batesville's Damien Dance and Gilb once more.

Owen Darwish, another sophomore, finished his year at 14-12. At 145, Darwish got a forfeit win before being pinned by UC's Evan Wolf. He then lost a 5-1 decision to Greensburg's Sean Slagle.

FC only forfeited the heavyweight division.

Wrestling starts 9 a.m. Saturday at the Tiernan Center. Masks are required; admission $8.
