Knightstown’s 14-point first quarter lead against the slow-starting Union County Patriots last Saturday was the beginning and three quarters later, the Panthers put a 67-35 Tri-Eastern Conference victory in the record books.

The Pats opened and closed the first quarter with field goals by Ragen Bias and Logan Boone wrapped around the Panthers’ 18-2 run.

Knightstown’s 6’8” senior center, Ellett Shackelford, scored eight of his game-high 17 points in the first eight minutes.

UC trailed, 18-4, at the end of the first quarter, but came back with double- figure numbers in each of the final three quarters, not enough to keep pace with Knightstown.

“They are a good team,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “We beat their press in the second quarter and began scoring. It was good experience for us to build on before Northeastern next week.”

The Pats improved to score 10 points in the second quarter, 14 in the third and closed out with 10 points in the final period.

Senior Ragen Bias led UC scoring with 13 points and junior Brad Meadows finished with 10 points. In addition to Shackelford’s 17 points, teammate Mason Fields was also in double figures with 12 points.

UC and Knightstown both finished with 17 rebounds. Senior Karson Stiner and Shackelford led the Panthers with 4 and 3, respectively. Mason Stewart was UC’s top rebounder with three.
