It was a sectional like no other!
The last Union County girls sectional championship was in 2006.
This year was Union County’s year – two back-to-back upsets...The Lady Patriots ousted Hagerstown, 27-12, in the semi-final round to advance.
Then the 44-34 championship victory over favored Northeastern was clearly an upset to everyone but UC’s team and coaching staff.
“These girls wanted it,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “They went in thinking positive and came out with a big win.”
NE won the opening tip-off and scored off Anna Drake’s rebound and putback. Union County’s first bucket was an Ally Gray 3-point field goal on a Katie McCashland assist. UC led, 3-2, until Drake’s 3-pointer tied the score, 5-5 and closed out the first quarter with NE leading 7-5.
“I think they (NE) were shell shocked by the Lady Patriots in the beginning and never worked out of it,” Coach Gray said.
The Lady Knights led by two, 7-5, at the first break and by three (16-13) with the Lady Patriots keeping close at the halftime intermission.
Coach Gray used halftime to refresh the seven players used throughout the 32 minutes of the sectional championship game.
Brooke Fields and Lauren Alldredge opened with back-to-back 3-pointers. Then after UC grabbed a defensive rebound, Fields eyed Alldredge waiting all alone at the basket. Bingo! The Lady Pats moved up to take a 21-18 lead in the first three minutes of play.
Gray drove the lane to score. Moments later, Shelby Hill and Faith Richardson both scored in the lane before Carly McCashland put UC up by 10 (30-20) after three quarters.
The Lady Pats’ confidence and basketball skills didn’t let up down the stretch.
UC scored 17 points in the final period and played defense like no other to win, 44-34 and Union County fans in the stands went wild, not to mention the team and coaches.
“They made it look so easy,” UCHS principal Connie Rosenberger said after watching Fields with the ball tucked under her arm in a corner near mid-court and her teammates casually waiting at their posts as the last few seconds ticked off the scoreboard.
It was definitely a sectional like no other.
