Franklin County senior Andrew Merritt earned his way into the 132-pound bracket at the NC Fieldhouse, then faced off in a tight matchup with Indianapolis Roncalli's Drew Willis. A late escape by the Wildcat wrestler had him poised to tie the match if he could secure a takedown; time ran out before he could, though, as Willis won 5-3.
Merritt's final year for the Cats ends at 30-9.
Freshman Colin Troyer's impressive campaign at 106 concluded with a hard-fought 4-2 loss to Cole Vandygriff of New Palestine. Troyer also needed to come up with a late takedown or reversal to force overtime. The frosh's debut closes at 29-5.
Another Wildcat first-year wrestler qualified for semistate at 113, Cole Freese. The Cats' freshman was no match for Tommy Frazier of Zionsville, who pinned Freese in the first 25 seconds. Freese won 27 of his 39 matches this season to start his varsity career.
EC finished third as a team behind winning Cathedral and Roncalli.
Unbeaten Trojan junior Blake Wolf heads to Indianapolis with a 46-0 record at 126 pounds. Teammate Charlie Euson claimed the 160-lb. bracket and brings a 44-2 mark to Indy. EC's Rider Searcy was runner-up at 145, running his record to 44-2. David Nash (42-4) of the Trojans placed third at 182. Ryan Bovard (38-9) from the St. Leon school also won twice to advance at 195. Lawrenceburg's Corbin Walston (44-2) lost for the first time at 152, but not before qualifying for state.
Also of note, Northeastern's Heather Crull qualified for the state finals at 106; she finished third and sports a 45-3 record.
The championships start Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
