Born April 10, 1940 in Brookville, she was one of eleven children born to the late Aloys and Eva (Schebler) Nobbe. On May 9, 1959, she and the former Donald E. Burkhart were united in marriage, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2021.
Bernice was employed at St. Mary's Catholic School in Rushville, for many years in food service and as a preschool teacher. She and Donald moved to Avon after Donald's retirement from St. Mary's School. Bernice continued her work in education with Brownsburg Schools as a special education assistant. She was a member of St. Susanna Catholic Church in Plainfield.
Survivors include five children, Brenda Allspaw of Avon, Michael Burkhart of Tipp City, Ohio, Laura Burkhart of Avon, James Burkhart of Carmel and Joshua Burkhart of Fishers; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two sisters, Leona Martin of Brookville and Roselyn Volz of West Chester, Ohio; four brothers, Urban Nobbe of Brookville, Leonard Nobbe of Batesville, Clifford Nobbe of Greensburg and Greg Nobbe of Brookville; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Smith, Marilyn Poe and Sylvia Rosenberger; and one brother, Virgil 'Butch' Nobbe.
Rev. Vincent Lampert officiated the private Catholic Funeral Rite on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.
