Patriots Basketball– Split at Preble Shawnee Tournament
January 6, 2022 at 3:40 p.m.
Union County opened last week’s Preble Shawnee Holiday Tournament with a pair of losses to the host school, Preble Shawnee. The Arrows defeated UC in the junior varsity tournament and won a 62-47 decision over UC at the varsity level.
“Yesterday we had too many turnovers and trouble rebounding,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “And Preble did a good job keeping our offense under control.”
What a difference a day makes...The JV Patriots came back the following day to manhandle the Tri-County North Panthers, 41-26.
Ditto UC Varsity...Led by a quartet of shooters with an eye for the basket, Union County never trailed in the 68-43 victory over Tri-County North.
The Pat quartet netted 51 of the teams’ 68 points. Add Brad Meadows’ three treys in a fourth quarter off-the-bench contribution for a total of 60 points by the quartet-plus-one.
Ragen Bias finished with 18 points, Keaghan Coyle 11, Mason Stewart 11 and Reece Watterson 11.
The Patriots took control at the opening tip-off and led by 13 before TCN found the basket. First quarter score was 21-8 and the second quarter was another 21-point effort while limiting the Panthers to 14 total points in the first half.
“We moved the ball well, and cut down dribbling, in the first half,” McCool said. “And when we got selfish with the ball, we looked really good.”
TCN reached double figures in the third quarter and outscored the Pats, 14-11, and broke even with the Pats, 15-15, in the final two periods. But it was too little too late.
Defensively, the Patriots were leaders as well. UC outrebounded the Panthers, 26-19, and had nine steals to help create 21 Panther turnovers.
“Our defense worked well and we boxed out a lot better tonight,” McCool said.
Tri County North was led by junior Logan Floy’s 20 points and sophomore Luke Eby’s 10.
