The Wildcats came up with the opening tip-off, limited the Patriots to single digits through the first half and turned on their offense.
“We played hard and played pretty good defense,” UC head coach Alex McCool said. “But our offense came up short.”
Franklin County held a 9-2 lead in the first half and bumped it up to 33-8 at halftime.
After halftime, the Wildcats continued to post double figures in both remaining quarters - 13 in the third and 10 in the fourth. The Patriots' best scoring quarter was the third with 9 points posted on 2 three-pointers (Keaghan Coyle and Ragen Bias) and an old-fashioned 2-point bucket and one-of-two free throws from Coyle.
“We played so much defense that we got tired,” McCool said. “And kept turning the ball over so much. If we can cut down on our turnovers, that would help us a lot on both ends of the court.”
Led by the game's scoring leader, the Wildcats were at their scoring best in the second and third periods – 24 points in the second and 13 in the third. The Cats were also careful with the ball, turning it over just four times in the game.
FC senior Chad Cox was one-of-three Wildcats to score in double digits. Cox finished with 12 points while junior Jace Lee added 10 and senior JD Stokes 8. Cox and Stokes brought down seven rebounds apiece, Lee five and junior Brant Ertel three. Senior Bridger Bolos had 7 points and 4 assists and Ertel dished out three dimes while adding 7 points of his own. Stokes, Bolos and Cox had 2 steals each.
Bias and Mason Stewart led the Patriots with 7 points each. Coyle, Stewart and Rhett Hollen had 3 rebounds each for Union County.
“They are a really good team, very good team,” McCool said. “Their pressure bothered us a little bit, but we did a better job adjusting to it.”
FC also won big in the opener as the junior varsity won 42-14.
