The Rushville Lady Lions met with the Franklin County Lady Wildcats in an Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference matchup last Tuesday in Brookville.

The game was a tale of two halves. The first half belonged to Franklin County with the Lady Cats leading by four points at halftime, 18-14. The second half was Rushville's game. Down by four to start the third quarter, the Lady Lions put up 22 points in the third period to take a nine-point lead into the final frame. RCHS outscored FC 12-4 in the final quarter to earn a conference road win by a score of 48-31.

“We know as a team we are capable of beating anyone in our sectional and we plan to continue to get better every day to be the most prepared team in that tournament,” were FC's head coach Kyle Van Meter's comments afterward.

Annika Marlow hit the first shot of the game for Rushville, putting the Lady Lions up early. Briley Munchel hit a three-pointer and later in the period sank a long ball from just inside the arc for Rushville's seventh point. The Wildcats hit four of their seven shots in the quarter with sophomore Nicole Mears leading the way for the Cats with four points; Josie Rolfes was one of two from three-point land in the period and Kassidy Schell added two of Franklin County's nine first-quarter points. Another nine points for the Lady Cats in the second quarter were matched by seven more from the Lady Lions. Schell led the way for FC, scoring the first five points in the quarter. Marlow stopped the FC run by sinking a pair of free throws. Marlow then added five more points, giving her seven of Rushville's 14 points at the half.

Kiersten Schell scored the opening basket of the second half for Franklin County. The Lady Lions then got hot from the field. Sophia Dora put up four points and Marlow drained a three-ball to put Rushville up by one and give them their first lead of the game. The Lady Cats would add seven more points in the third quarter. Kassidy Schell and Mears each added another basket and Tiffany Billman completed a three-point play after grabbing an offensive rebound and taking a foul on the putback. Rushville outscored FC in the third by putting up 22 points. Lexi Morris drained a three-point shot, Dora added five more points and Belle Gossett hit a pair from the charity stripe to finish the period on a 7-0 run.

Dora started the final period with a layup and Leonie Boyer hit a long ball to extend the Rushville run, putting up 12 unanswered points. Mears ended the slide - in which her Lady Cats shot 0-of-6 - by hitting two free throws. The Lady Lions worked the ball for the final four minutes, scoring seven more points on 3-of-3 shooting. Boyer was two for two, scoring five of those, and Dora hit a mid-range jumper. Kassidy Schell added two more free throws with 19 seconds left but the Lady Lions' 34 second-half points secured a road win and bumped them up to 10-7 on the season and 4-0 in EIAC contests.
The Lady Wildcats dropped to 8-10 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Dora and Marlow each sank 15 for the Lions while Kassidy Schell led FC with 11 and Mears added 10.

Freshman Leah West put up a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds Saturday as the Greensburg Lady Pirates handed Franklin County their fifth loss in a row. In a game where the two teams were separated by just two points at halftime, Greensburg Community High School outscored the Lady Wildcats in the second half to earn their fifth victory of the season with a 46-39 win. Greensburg is now 5-12 and 3-2 in EIAC games. FC is now 8-11 and has fallen to 1-3 in conference play.

“We play a very tough schedule and are always battling in every game but we know that the expectations this year are not just to battle but to win,” added Van Meter.

Leading the Lady Cats in scoring was Kassidy Schell with 23 points. She also went 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
