Services, to celebrate Robert’s life, will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022. Visitation will begin at 12 noon with military honors to follow at 2:00pm, at Simply Salem, 1003 S Salem Road, Liberty, Indiana 47353.
Robert was born on May 21, 1947, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Joseph and Bernice Chewning. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving from 1965 - 1969, and a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1969 until 1973. He worked as a civilian with the United States Navy from 1973 until 1977. He was raised in Cottage Grove and lived in Liberty for most of his life before moving to Brunswick, Georgia, where he spent his last years.
Robert had a laugh that anyone could recognize. He loved to make people laugh and was a true jokester. He was beyond generous and would give everything he had to anyone in need. He loved his family, children and grandchildren dearly, and cherished every moment he had with them. He was a great artist, a jack of all trades who could help you fix anything. He loved working on cars, cooking, watching football and NASCAR, playing card games and reminiscing about old times. He was a Master Mason with Lodge 58 F & A M, and American Legion Post 122 in Liberty.
Survivors include brothers, Randall Chewning (Darlene), Larry Chewning (Sharon), an aunt Norma Ward, Children, Christina Hash (Ronnie), Zachery Chewning, Daun Sanderlin, Jessica Jenkins (John), grandchildren, Malachi Hash, Myla Hash, Tyler Chewning, Chelsea Chewning, Robert T. Chewning III, Austin Wright, Hannah Montalvo-Hewitt, Hunter Hewitt, Henry Sanderlin, and several great grandchildren, many close cousins, beloved nieces and nephews, and special friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert T. Chewning, II.
