Baseball revival coming for UC youth

The Grove in College Corner may be getting back to its heyday of Union County youngsters learning the game of baseball, if Ryan Niehoff and other community volunteers have a say.

“I remember when I was growing up, they always had baseball there,” said Niehoff, echoing the thoughts of many former little leaguers.

The Grove has hosted t-ball of late, but locals would like to return to a bustle of activity there.

“I was going to do this on my own, but I'll become a member of the College Corner Community Club next month,” added Niehoff. “They're the ones who own the park and pay the electric bill. There are probably about 10 other people who will help out or be involved.”

After many years of hosting youth sports, the club got somewhat burnt out.
“Mike Murray told me it would be nice to have somebody young come in,” said Niehoff.

Niehoff's still working on sponsorships to cover team names, t-shirts, hats and other equipment. Banners may also be hung on the Grove's outfield fences.
College Corner Youth League signups are getting underway soon.

The West College Corner Firehouse will hold registration events Feb. 5 & 12 from noon-3 p.m. for t-ball and coach pitch softball/baseball (ages 4-8). A first child is $40, second child $35 and third child $30. Opening day is set for June 18; games will be Tuesdays and Thursdays until Aug. 11 and possibly Mondays depending on numbers.

Niehoff is busy putting together a brand-new middle school baseball team, with a player callout for seventh and eighth graders scheduled this Friday, 2:30 p.m. at the UCMS cafeteria. Niehoff will be coaching the squad with help from high school coaches and the team will work out at the Liberty diamonds behind the fairgrounds.

Meanwhile, Union County Youth League signups have already started with online registration at https://active.leagueone.com/Olr/Pages/Welcome.aspx?Clubld=13871. Divisions for baseball are rookie/minor, t-ball, major and senior while divisions for fastpitch softball are rookie and major. The league also plays in Liberty.
For UCYL, parents should email the following to [email protected] – copy of birth certificate and child's age. T-ballers must be four years old before May 1. Signing up prior to Feb. 6 will save a family $10; a late fee of $25 per child would be added if signing up after Feb. 20. First-child costs are $73, followed by second child ($68), third child ($63) and additional children at $3 each.

If interested in coaching or with questions for Niehoff, call 513-313-4448 or email [email protected]. UCYL inquiries should be made to president Willy Carter at 765-977-2977.

“I've gotten a good response so far on Facebook,” added Niehoff. “I'm excited for it.”
