She was born on November 8, 1935, one of five children of the late Thomas and Lillian Whipple Gruell.
Sonya retired from working for over 40 years at Audrey's Dress Shop in Connersville and Cambridge City and at Marie's in Liberty. After retirement, she worked at The Oak Store in Hagerstown. She enjoyed watching TV dramas and Jeopardy, spending time with her family and going out to eat at her favorite restaurant.
She is survived by her son, Todd Gruell of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Patrick (fiancée Becca) Gruell and Allyson (Brett) Crawford; and great-grandchildren, Paxton Crawford and twins, Finn and Justine Crawford.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded by a brother, Robert Gruell; and sisters, Verna Mae Retherford, Carolyn Wright, and Sue Walker.
Graveside services will be at Union Cemetery on Saturday March 19, 2022 at 12:00 noon.
