Union County opened the  girls basketball season at Milan last Friday night with a lopsided 45-9 win over the Lady Indians.

“Great offensive effort. Balanced scoring from our side,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Only gave up two baskets – five free throws and two baskets. Play defense like that you’re gonna win lot of ball games.”

Scoring was slow to start with a total of six points on the scoreboard, but UC soon  changed that.

“Offensively we didn’t shoot the ball too well tonight,” Gray said. “But we’ve been lighting it up in practice so as we go hoping it gets better.”

UC opened with a traditional 2-point basket (a Shelby Hill rebound put-back) and closed with a 3-pointer from Carly McCashland, 5-1.

Milan spread their two baskets over the second and third quarters. Halftime score stood at 18-3 and the Lady Indians trailed by 28 (34-6) to open the final period.

UC stayed in double-digit scoring (11 pts.) in the final period to notch a 45-9 victory on the road with the entire UC roster logging game time.

Senior center Hill finished in double-digit scoring with 14 points thanks in part to good assists from teammates.

“Great start on the road the first game,” Gray said. “Will be nice to get back in the gym on Monday and go with it.”

The Milan program is very young and without a senior but it also has a 6-1 sophomore and a pair of 5’11” freshmen that will benefit the Lady Indians in the coming years.
