The traditional season opener boys basketball game between neighboring schools at the Spartan Bowl last week was a little special for both schools.
Connersville won the game, 61-28, and honored the 1972 State Champion Connersville Spartan basketball team before the varsity game.
The Spartans led 17-4 after the first quarter and continued to score in double digits in each remaining quarter. The Patriots did not reach double digits until the final period.
Union County fell short of the senior-heavy Spartans from the opening tip-off and new coach Bobby Jones taking note of all the action from the sideline.
“Connersville is a very good team and I told our guys before we came down – we were going to get something out of this – If it’s a win, great,” Jones said. “We’re going to walk out of here with class, because we got beat by a better team.”
The Spartans were led by three in double figures – 6’3” senior Braxton Myers led all scorers with 15; Lucas Barron, 6’5”, and James Williams, 6’2”, added 11 and 10, respectively.
“We played some really good defense and did a good job trying to take care of the basketball,” Jones said. “Played with a lot of energy and confidence.”
Brad Meadows 5, Gavin Davis 7, Rhett Hollen 4, Ty Elleman 3, Josh Klein 2, Kyle Sams 2, Nick Watterson 2 contributed to the UC total.
“I don’t think we took enough shots and not assertive going to the basket in the first half. Second half did a better job,” Jones said. “I think our guys walked out the door with some confidence. Not into moral victories but we saw what we need to work on to get ready for next game.”
UC lost 73-63 to Randolph Southern Tuesday. A 24-16 third quarter was the difference. The Pats visit Knightstown Friday and host Morristown Tuesday.
