Hagerstown falls to Lady Pats in 3-0, N. Decatur prevails in 5 sets

Union County went up against Tri-Eastern Conference opponent Hagerstown last week and came away with a 3-1 win, an 8-0 TEC season and the 2022 Tri-Eastern Conference champions.
The Lady Patriots won the first set, 25-15. Hagerstown needed an extra point to win the second, 26-24. The Lady Pats got back on track to finish with 25-17 and 25-10 victories to win the match, 3-1 and the Tri-Eastern Conference, 8-0.
North Decatur edges Union County
The Lady Patriots and Lady Chargers went five sets and more than a dozen extra points before North Decatur won, 3-2, late last week.
UC edged ND, 26-24 to start, fell 23-25, won 25-18, 32-30 and lost 14-16.
“It was a great match, a great match,” UC coach Allison Kassens said. “A little frustrated how we lost, but it was a good match.”
The Lady Pats trailed by 10 in the first game but rallied to a 26-24 extra point win. ND answered with a rally to post a close 25-23 win in game two.
UC came back strong to run away with a 25-18 victory and go up 2-1.
“We had quite a few good performances tonight,” Kassens said. “Really happy with my back row players. They really stepped up to the plate tonight.”
Then came a nip and tuck set with so many tie scores and neither team leading for more than a point at a time until the Lady Chargers won, 32-30.
With both teams in top form, the fifth and deciding game was up for grabs.
Whitney King served three points, including an ace, to put UC up, 7-4. The Lady Chargers tied the score 11-11 before their final rally to win 16-14 and the match 3-2.
“It was a good match,” Kassens said. “We found things we need to work on before sectional because we want to make a deep post-season run at sectional.”
North Decatur improved to 25-4 and 6-0 first-place in the Mid-Hoosier Conference. The Lady Chargers will play 21-10 Hauser in Class 2A Sectional 42 at Hauser.
Union County is 20-10 and undefeated TEC champions. The Lady Patriots play Northeastern in the first game of Sectional 41 at Knightstown, Oct. 13 (today).
“Teams like North Decatur are what we’ll be facing at regional time, so it’s nice to go close with them because that is what’s to come at regional,” Kassens said. “It was a really fun match – good match for us at this time.”
