Union County turned back New Castle, 8-4, to start,  and added a pair of wins this week for a great 3-0 start.

The Lady Patriots stood tall at Cowan this week with a 4-1 victory in eight innings and beat North Decatur, 11-1 in five innings.

To brighten the pot, junior pitcher Bailey Mathews pitched in all three games and did her share at the plate in all three wins.

Union County and Cowan battled through the first two innings until UC shortstop AnnaLea Adams opened the third inning with a shot (HR) over the left field fence.

The Blackhawks came back in the fifth inning with a single and double to tie the score (1-1) that stood until the eighth inning.

Adams was the second batter at the plate in the top of the eighth inning and taking no chances, Cowan put her on base with an intentional walk.

Shelby Hill drew a walk to put two on base. Then Harly Pilgrim reached first on an error and scored Adams. Then it was Bailey Mathews time, who hit deep into center field and 2 RBIs when Hill and Pilgrim turned on the speed to complete the circle.

With the score at 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Cowan led off with a single into left field before Mathews threw 11 pitches to strike out the final three batters. UC 4,  Cowan 1 in eight innings.
