Union County, Winchester split doubleheader, 17-12, 13-3

Union County and Winchester circled the bases 45 times in the doubleheader baseball game last Saturday. The Patriots won the first game 17-12 and fell to the Falcons, 13-3, in the second.

“It’s always a slam fest when we play a doubleheader with Winchester,” UC coach Jordan Ashbrook said. “I remember another time a few years ago when 40-plus runs were scored in a doubleheader.”

When TEC teams play doubleheaders, the first game is the one that counts in Tri-Eastern Conference standings. So the Patriots rolled up a 1-0 Tri-Eastern Conference mark with the high scoring win .

“It was a good game,” Ashbrook said. “Our guys played hard to win the up and down game,”  Ashbrook said.

Winchester was ready when they stepped off the bus and scored three runs on three hits and left a runner on base.

UC stood tall at the plate and earned three walks to fill the bases early and scored Devyn Shepherd, Logan Boone and Kyle Sams with aggressive base running (stolen bases, etc.).

Three was UC’s magic number through the first three innings - 3 runs scored in the first inning, 3 runs again in the second and three runs in the third.
Winchester came back with four runs in the top of the third inning to close within two of the Patriots, 9-7.

The Falcons were runless in the fifth before adding a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. But it was clearly too little too late when UC bats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 17-12.

UC pitchers gave up 12 runs on 11 hits, 8 walks and 9 strikeouts. The Patriots scored 17 runs on 13 hits, 7 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Then came the second half of the doubleheader and Winchester built a 5-1 lead after two innings.

After winning an exciting lopsided 17-12 TEC win in the first game, the Patriots were a little worn out and fell 13-3 in the second game.

“I’m not unhappy with today,” Ashbrook said. “This is my fourth year coaching, which means I had our seniors as freshmen and watched them accept my hit and run coaching style. The team is doing a job.”
