Last Saturday the Franklin County Wildcats and Union Co. Patriots' softball teams faced off in a doubleheader. The Wildcats won both games. The first game took 8 innings, and the Wildcats came out on top with a walk-off win in extra innings with a score of 8-7. The second game the Wildcats run-ruled the Patriots with a score of 15-2.
In the first game freshman Jillian Harris had another phenomenal start in just her second varsity appearance against the undefeated Patriots, only allowing 4 earned runs and 3 unearned runs.
She allowed 10 hits, 5 walks, and had 1 strikeout. She also pitched the full 8 innings.
The Patriots were scoreless in the top of the first, while the Wildcats had a big 2-run homer from Kassidy Schell in the bottom of the first. The Patriots tied it all up in the third but they didn't hold the lead long because the Wildcats came back and scored another run in the bottom of the third. In the top of the 4th the Patriots took the lead again when they scored 3 runs making the score 5–3. But once again this didn't last long when FC senior Josie Rolfes had a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth tying it all up. In the 6th the Patriots and the Wildcats scored 2 runs keeping the score at an even 7-7.
Harris and her defense behind her held the Patriots leading to a big bottom of the eighth. Stang started the inning off quick with a triple. Lake then had the opportunity to bunt to walk the game off. Lake had a perfect bunt to the first base side allowing Stang to score. This broke the Patriots' undefeated record.
AnnaLea Adams and freshman Natalie Long each had three knocks for UC; Adams drove in three with a homer and Long belted a double and triple. Bailey Mathews took the complete game loss, striking out 10 and walking five.
In the second game junior Kendal Cain got the start only allowing 1 run, 1 unearned run, 4 hits, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Adams had two Patriot hits (double, RBI). Freshman Kaiyd Burroughs hurled four innings with seven earned runs, six free passes and a punchout.
