Lady Pats repeat Sectional Champions eliminate Shenandoah

The Union County Lady Patriots became the IHSAA 2023 Girls Basketball Sectional #41 Champions last Saturday at Hagerstown High School. UC defeated the Shenandoah Lady Raiders, 39-22, to advance to the Southmont Regional on Saturday, Feb. 11.

”Great game, “Union County coach Scott Gray said. “So proud of these kids and the three great seniors.”

The final score was a well-deserved Union County-style victory and UC fans flooded the floor to congratulate the small, short team with no height. The non-celebrating fans stood motionless trying to understand what they had just witnessed.

“We played a very smart game of basketball in keeping the score low,” Gray said.

Shenandoah struggled to  score putting a 3 on the scoreboard after the first quarter. The Raiders failed to reach double figures until the 17-point total in the third period and 22 in the final eight minutes. It all added up to a 17 point Shenandoah loss.

“We are small,” Gray said “But we are quick and shoot the ball well.”

UC began with back-to-back threes in the first quarter from Katie McCashland and Peityn Gillman. Shenandoah sophomore Aurora McKnight also made a 3-pointer.

The low 6-3 first quarter score was replaced by 18-8  at halftime and that was just a taste of what was yet to come.

Union County-size or the lack of size- was stealing the ball without opponents knowing what happened. Shenandoah committed 25 total turnovers with 12 in the first half.

“We played hard tonight after winning a great game last night,” Gray said. “They came tonight and gave their all.”

The Lady Pats doubled their halftime score and allowed the Lady Raiders four field goals. The fourth quarter was nearly even with 8 points for Union County and 7 for Shenandoah.

“Love them to death. can’t wait until next week,” Gray said.

Union County will play Greencastle at 4 p.m. Eastern Hancock takes on University at 1 p.m.
