UC edges Rushville on Meadows’ walk-off

By Vivian Risch-

Union County turned themselves around this week to beat the Rushville Lions, 41-39, on a buzzer beater at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium.

UC trailed by 10 near the end of the third quarter but bounced back to lead by 3, 5,  and 7 before Rushville fought back to tie the score 39-39 with 2:41 ticking off the clock.

That’s when every steal, rebound, shot, time out and teamwork counted the most.

The Patriots gave it their best shot and came up with freshman Nick Watterson pullling down a defensive rebound with five seconds on the clock and threw it to halfcourt and relayed to Bradley Meadows waiting in the corner.

“To have a guy rebound a defensive shot with five seconds on the clock and get it to the other end in time to make the shot is something you don’t see a freshman do,” Jones said. “He made a good play.”

Ziip! The ball was in the air before time ran out and ripped through the net without hesitation. The official on the scene signaled it was in time and a 41-39 Union County victory.

Meadows and Rushville senior Dylan Thompson both scored 17 points.

“It was a hard-fought game,” UC coach Bobby Jones said. “They were able to stick with it in a tough situation and win.”

The Lions played right into UC’s game plan.

“They took flashy shots which is what we wanted them to do and we were able to get the rebound of their contested shots,” Jones said. “Josh Klein left the game early tonight, but Josh is a big reason we were in the position we were in. He has played really tough the last two games and showed his mentality tonight. Josh is a tough kid who will bounce back.”
