Patriots look for more wins in ‘23

By Chris Louden -

The Union County Patriots' baseball team will look to rebound from last year's 12-10 record. A winning record sure, but not what UC fans have become accustomed to for the last 20 years. Since 2003 the Pats have averaged 18.7 wins a year and claimed seven TEC championships.

The 2023 Patriots will look to continue that success under the direction of Jordan Ashbrook. The skipper will be entering his third full season with a record of 30-21 and 9-7 in TEC games. Ashbrook has experience coming back on the mound, with senior Mathew Wooley - a five-game winner and inning eater for UC last year - and junior Kyle Sams, who finished with 47 strikeouts last season.

ALL-TEC third baseman Eric Burdine batted in 29 runs and hit .426 last season; he'll be manning the hot corner and at first base for the Pats for his senior year. Devyn Shepherd returns in centerfield after hitting .409 a season ago and scoring 25 runs, second most on UC last year, and his 11 stolen bases placed him in the top 10 in the TEC.

The defense for this season's Patriots has more experience with shortstop Josh Klein back. Also, back for UC is one of the best defenders in the conference in fielding percentage; Logan Boone will be manning second base this season. Sophomore Coleton Wicker will assume the signal caller roll behind the plate with Brady Woeste also seeing time at catcher. Gavin Davis is a sure defender and should see time for the Pats as a utility type player while getting time on the mound. Sophomore Isaiah Lowe will see time in the outfield along with Wooley and Shephard. The remaining Patriots on the varsity roster this season are juniors Benton Richardson and Parker Moles.

UC begins the season on Saturday when they host Shenandoah for a doubleheader. The games start at 11 a.m and 1 p.m. The Pats will begin conference play the following Saturday, April 8 against Winchester.
