UC drops sixth in a row

The Union County Patriots' baseball team has found themselves in a slump as of late. On Tuesday evening they hosted the Greensburg Pirates and held the lead in the fifth inning, but the Pirates scored in each of the final innings to hand the Pats their sixth loss in a row.

Coleton Wicker got the start on the hill for UC, the sophomore tossing just 6.2 innings this season before the start. Greensburg got on the scoreboard first putting up two runs in the first. Devyn Shepherd closed the gap to a one-run game after scoring on an error  in the bottom of the first. Wicker settled down and picked up six strikeouts over the next few innings while shutting out the Bucs. In the top of the fourth Wicker issued back-to-back walks that resulted in a run being scored on a fielder's choice. UC was down 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Sams doubled to right field, scoring Mathew Wooley and Shepherd (2nd run scored). Eric Burdine followed Sams' hit with his own RBI double and UC was up 4-3.

Coach Jordan Ashbrook brought in junior Mason Stewart to pitch the sixth and the Pirates started the inning with a double, then a single that tied the game up. A fielder's choice got Greensburg another run in the frame, and they led 5-4 going into the final inning. A sacrifice fly to Wooley in left field got the Pirates another run in the top of the seventh and the Pats were unable to add any runs in the bottom half of the inning. UC lost 6-4, dropping their record to 4-15 overall. The Pats tallied just five hits in the game with Sams leading the way with two. Wicker tossed five innings in the game allowing four hits and two earned runs. Stewart went two innings, allowing three runs and picking up three strikeouts.

The 15 losses on the season for this 2023 Pats' team ties them for the second-most losses in UC history, with the '89, '01 and '02 teams. The most losses in UC baseball history came in 2005 when the Pats went 10-16; that was also the last time UC finished under .500 for the season. The Pats are 1-5 in TEC games this season. The last time UC lost five conference games in a season was in 1983.

UC lost 6-1 to visiting Richmond May 4. Logan Boone had two of UC's seven hits (and steal) and Shepherd had a double. Sams had the RBI. Burdine and Wooley had nearly identical pitching lines in splitting duty, with the former taking the loss. Each gave up two earned runs.

The Pats will travel to Straughn this evening to face Tri (6-11) and look to snap their losing streak.
