Hill’s slam sends UC girls to final

By Vivian Risch-

Day two at the IHSAA Class 2A Softball Sectional at Union County was a continuance of the first day when Eastern Hancock and Union County advanced on home run filled games.

Eastern Hancock shut out Northeastern, 9-0, on the second sectional day.  Union County followed up with a dramatic come from behind 8-4 victory over Hagerstown.

UC held a 2-1 edge over the  Lady Tigers after the first inning before Hagerstown went up in the bottom of the fifth.

But the sixth inning brought about a change. Union County sent seven batters to the plate. Two of the seven scored early (4-3). Natalie Long reached first on a Hagerstown fielding error, and suddenly, UC’s lead-off hitter Ally Gray hit a double and HHS intentionally walked AnnaLea Adams to fill the bases. Big mistake, Shelby Hill was on deck. Hill swung on the second pitch to the plate. UC coach Doug Adams watched as it cleared the left field fence, then began waving  the baserunners and Hill rounded the bases at top speed. Hill was greeted at home plate by team members and fans cheering the grand slam home run as many Hagerstown fans vacated their seats and headed for home.

Eastern Hancock met Union County in the championship game at 6 p.m. on  Wednesday, May 24. Result was too late for publication.
