Eastern Hancock shut out the Shenandoah Lady Raiders, 14-0, to open the first game of the IHSAA Class 2A Softball Sectional at Union County this past Monday and the Lady Patriots sent Knightstown home with a 16-5 loss.

Monday’s contests were one-of-a-kind - 14-0, shut out in the first game and Union County winning 16-5 in five innings.

Hitting also figured into the one-of-a-kind criteria. EH had four home runs in the first game and UC matched that number in the win over Knightstown. Eight runs in back-to-back Indiana Class 2A Softball Sectional at Union County.

Eastern Hancock scored 3 runs in the first inning, 6 runs in the third inning including two home runs, 4 runs including 2 home runs in the fourth inning and a single run (home run) in the fifth inning.

Meanwhile EH pitchers fared well at the plate - 3 walks, 7 strikeouts, and 4 hits.

Eastern Hancock pitchers fanned 7 Royals beginning in the opening two innings (first and second) when EH retired six batters.

Union County’s lead-off trio of Ally Gray, AnnaLea Adams, and Shelby Hill got the game going against Knightstown on Monday. A single (Gray), a home run (Adams) and a fielding error (Hill) put all three safely on base. Bailey Mathews doubled, Whitney King was safe at first and eventually scored UC’s fourth run in the first inning.

Home run time returned in the bottom of the second inning after Gray was safe at first on an up-the-middle grounder before Adams and Hill sent the ball over the fence to score Gray and put the Lady Pats  up 7-0.

The Lady Panthers scored a run in the second inning before UC scored three runs in the third and six runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Panthers added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but it was too little, too late to change the 16-5 outcome.
