The RCHS cross country teams traveled to Union City Sept. 2 to compete in the Coach Noff Invitational. Both teams won the meet.

Leading the way for the Lady Lions again was freshman standout Josie Corn placing 2nd overall. The Lady Lions had a good pack after Corn by placing 7 in the top 20 with Melany Mahan (9), Jorja Ellis (12), Mia Norvell (13), Layla Denney (15), Kendra Jacobs (16), Maddy Hankins (17) and Jentri Wallace (18). “This was a great team win for us,” said coach Amy Tush. “These freshmen really work hard and help the upperclassmen fill the gaps we need this year.”

Junior Hunter Parmerlee and senior Charlie Sterrett led the way for the boys, placing 6-7. Packing together in a minute time spread was the rest of the pack with Logan Jacobs (10), Isaac Schelle (12), Dustin King (16) and Kyle Jacobs (18).

“This should be a huge morale booster for this team,” Tush noted. “We have three varsity runners out and these boys are stepping up. Dustin, Logan and Isaac are constant reminders how deep a team we are.”

The next race for Rushville was the CougarPalooza hosted by Greenfield Sept. 6 in Brandywine Park.

Greenfield ran away with both team titles with a near perfect score of 22 on the boys side and 26 on the girls. Rushville placed 3rd in both, the boys scoring 87. “These schools are so much bigger than us, but we held our own and rose to the competition,” noted Tush. Sterrett placed 14th and others in the top 20 were Parmerlee (16), L. Jacobs (18), Schelle (19) and King (20).

The Lady Lions tied Roncalli at 81 which left it up to Norvell (6th runner) to break the tie. Leading the way was Corn placing 5th. Said Tush: “It was nice to see Josie step up fearless and race well today … her confidence continues to grow as the season progresses.” Hankins (15) fought through sickness and is getting back to her old self, said the coach. Other finishers were Mahan (16), Jacobs (22), Ellis (23), Norvell (24) and Wallace (25).

Up next was the Whiteland Invitational Saturday. Over 700 high school/middle athletes participated with Whiteland winning on the girls side and Greenwood for the boys.

RCHS' boys finished 4th. Leading the way were Parmerlee (16) and Sterrett (21). Close behind were L. Jacobs (23), Schelle (33) and King (45). King, Jacobs, Ty Ellis and Tanner Ash set lifetime bests. The Lady Lions placed 7th led by Corn in 9th with a lifetime best of 21:14. Mahan (26), Hankins (36), Norvell (45) and Wallace (55) completed scoring. Mahan, Layla Denning, Jacobs, and Josie Newhouse all set lifetime bests. “It was a fast course and perfect day for a race,” noted Tush.

The Lions ran their fourth race in 11 days Tuesday at New Castle's Memorial Park.
