Preserving history: Franklin Co. Historical Society presents program on Goodwin Family

October 3, 2024 at 12:21 p.m.

The Franklin County Historical Society will present a program on the four generations of the Goodwin Family of Brookville who were instrumental in the founding of the Brookville Methodist Church, the Brookville Bank, the Brookville Telephone Co., the restoration of the Whitewater Canal, and the restoration of three historic churches and more.  The program developed by Wayne F Bauer will be presented at the Brookville Library on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. and will last approximately an hour.

“The Goodwin family, along with the Shirk family, were the primary drivers of Brookville and Franklin County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” Bauer explained. “The presentation is primarily about the Goodwin family as that is what I researched. I have uncovered some interesting history and photographs of the family that I think the public would enjoy seeing.”

The Franklin County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of Franklin County’s history through comprehensive study and research, the identification and preservation of historic sites, the commemoration of significant historical events within the county, and the ongoing maintenance of key landmarks such as the Little Cedar Grove Baptist Church, the Old Brick Church, the Seminary Building (which serves as a museum), the Fries Memorial, and the Lew Wallace Statue. The historical society solely depends on memberships, endowments, and contributions to maintain the buildings. The annual cost of maintaining the buildings is $8,000, excluding necessary repairs and other expenses. At this time, the historical society only has 20 members compared to 400 members at one time. Membership applications will be available at Bauer’s presentation on blank. Dues are $10 a year. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be sent to the Franklin County Historical Association at PO Box 342 Brookville, IN 47012.
