Tuesday, April 6 marked the return to action for the Franklin County Lady Wildcat tennis team, forced to bypass what would surely have been a successful year in 2020.

The Cats got the new season off right by defeating visiting Centerville, 4-1. The first two points were earned by the doubles units. Grace Roth and Rae Ertel straight-setted their Bulldog opponents on the No. 1 court by a 6-1, 6-1 count.

Next door on the No. 2 court, it was Kaylin Knapp and Nicole Mears putting away their foes, 6-2, 6-0. The home team clinched the win shortly after, as No. 3 singles Kacie Williams and No. 2 singles Elise Klei finished off their matches in short order. Klei won 6-2, 6-3, while Williams claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory. On the first singles court, Allie Routh earned a third set when she followed a 6-3 loss in set one with a 6-2 second. Centerville's ace eventually won with a 6-2 tiebreaking set. In junior varsity play, FC won four pro sets.

Chloe Cowen won 8-1, Regan Barker 8-2, Lola Mann 8-2 and the doubles team of Halee Barker and Katherine Apsley, 8-0. In a complete mismatch, the Wildcats won a 5-0 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference bout with visiting South Dearborn Thursday.

The Lady Knights could not secure one game on the evening, in varsity or JV. Routh, Klei and Williams each won 6-0, 6-0, as did the pairs of Ertel/Roth and Mears/Knapp. Cowen, the Barkers, Mann and Apsley each won sets in reserve singles action.

The girls lost for the first time Monday, falling 4-1 at Lawrenceburg. Klei was the lone winner, claiming a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Routh lost 6-1, 6-2 and Williams 6-4, 7-6 (7-0). Ertel and Roth suffered a 6-3, 6-0 setback, while Mears and Knapp fell 6-4, 6-1. H. Barker and Apsley won an 8-3 set in JV doubles while Cowen and R. Barker won 8-2. Cowen, R. Barker and Mann dropped pro sets in reserve singles. FC (2-1, 1-0) travels to Batesville Thursday for another conference match.
