Union County won both games of the doubleheader with Connersville last week on the mound and at the plate.

“Two incredible pitching performances and hits when we needed it – a hit or double or whatever, we got it.” UC coach Scott Gray said. “In the last inning of the second game, Whitney King’s base hit was what we needed. Tori (Russell) followed up with a double and we went on from there.”

The Lady Pats played catch-up to win both games.

UC trailed 2-0 going into the fifth inning but a late four-run rally lifted UC to a 4-2 win in the first game.

Connersville held a 2-1 edge in the top of the fourth inning in the second game, but hot UC bats scored five runs on a pair of singles wrapped around a grand slam home run to go ahead, 6-2, in the bottom of the inning.

UC 4, Connersville 2

The Lady Spartans scored a run in each of the first two innings and Union County didn’t light up the scoreboard until the fifth and six innings.

Trailing, 2-0, in the fifth inning, Russell hit a double with one out. Singles from Annalea Adams and Sophia Knock brought Russell home. Chloe Greene drew a walk and Adams scored on a centerfield fly ball.

Russell led the Lady Patriots with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
UC 6-Connersville 3

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, fell silent at the plate in the second and third innings and woke up in the fourth.

Connersville opened the fourth inning with Paige Dunaway’s triple to the fence in left field. The Spartan sophomore moved to third and scored with one out before back-to-back infield flyouts ended the inning.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, UC bats were hot... King singled over the shortstop and Russell doubled over the third baseman to score King. Adams’ infield single put two on base and the Spartans filled the bases with a walk to Knock. That brought Shelby Hill to the plate. With a full count, the junior catcher made solid contact to centerfield where a pair of Spartan outfielders could only watch as it sailed over the fence. The grand slam homer put the Lady Pats up, 5-1, going into the fifth inning.

Connersville scored a run in the top of the fifth on a single and double but UC pitcher Chloe Greene ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts. Shortly thereafter, the officials ended the game due to a sighting of lightning. Final score, UC 6, Connersville 3.
