Union County suffered a 46-7 hit from Northeastern in the season opener at Curry/Phenis Field last Friday. The Patriots were also hit by a Covid-19 tracking earlier in the afternoon.

“We got hit by quarantine,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said. “We didn’t know the latest until 2:30, this afternoon.”

The Patriots 25-players roster was reduced to 14 on opening night.

“This latest covid thing is a real setback,” Hofmann said. “Four, five starters are out tonight and we were close to getting a couple guys eligible.”

Both teams scored on first possessions. NE ran the ball in from 33 yards out but missed a 2-point PAT.

Union County scored on Blake Richards’ 4-yard run and a Gabe Cox PAT kick.

Here is the rest of the story...The Patriots ran 13 plays (4 first downs) in nine minutes. An early fumble was not lost when Memphis Kratzer recovered it. Three plays later, Kratzer picked up 12 rushing yards before UC went into the end zone.

The Knights responded with a 20-yard pass into the end zone and 2-point conversion. And just one flag thrown in the quarter.
UC went into the second half trailing, 14-7.

“With so many starters out we shuffled kids around, guys playing positions they haven’t practiced,” Hofmann said.

In the remaining three quarters, NE’s roster of numerous upper-classmen (20+) were in control. Three TDs in the second quarter, one each in the third and fourth quarters, but UC did not quit.

“Late in the game, we reset our goal - keep them under 50,” the UC coach said. “And we did that.”

Quarantine could be anywhere from seven days to two weeks.
