The Union County Lady Patriots collected their fifth win of the season at South Decatur last Saturday, Dec. 11, with a 10-point, 40-30, victory.

UC opened with 15 points in the first quarter and closed out the fourth quarter again in double digits (10 points). The Lady Pats experienced a slow down second and third quarters with 8 points each.

“We started out on top but I believe at halftime our girls thought it was over thinking...we’re going to beat this team bad,” UC Coach Scott Gray said. “Then all of a sudden, we spend the rest of the game trying to figure out what went wrong.”

UC rolled out to 14-7 first quarter lead with Lauren Alldredge hitting a 3-point field goal to start. The 5’8” senior completed four 3’s in her game-high 16 points. Freshman Peityn Gillman came off the bench with a 3-point field goal in the first quarter, to finish with nine total points.

“I’m really glad Peityn Gillman came in and played as well as she did,” Gray said.” And Lauren shot the ball well early.”

Defensively, UC held South Decatur to 11 total points in the first half. SD out-rebounded the Lady Patriots by one, 27-26, but failed to match Faith Richardson’s seven rebounds. Makayla Somers came close with six rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars. Richardson was successful in drawing not one, but two offensive charge fouls by Kiley Best, who was the first of two South Decatur players to go to the bench with five fouls.

The Lady Cougars trailed by nine after three periods but cut it to two, 30-28, with 4:28 remaining in the game. The Lady Pats finished the game with nine trips to the free throw line and converted 9-of-18 freebies.

Union County won their fifth game of the season, 40-30.

“We did not play well,” Gray said before finishing with what has become a familiar phrase...“I would much rather win ugly than not at all. We’ll just keep improving.”
