With the clock stopped with a mere one-point-6 seconds showing, the Patriots were in possession at their end of the court.
The inbound pass went to Ty Elleman, who flipped it over defenders and into the hands of Mason Stewart. With the 6’2” sophomore center’s guidance, the ball cleared the hoop as time ran out.
“Ty made a great pass to Stewart to get the win on a nice finish,” UC head coach Alex McCool said. “A good start with 1-0 in conference play.”
It was a great way to begin the season again. The Patriots have not been on the court since the pre-Thanksgiving game with Connersville.
The Patriots improved to 1-1 and 1-0 in the Tri-Eastern Conference. Hagerstown dropped to 1-4 and 0-1 in the TEC.
UC played catch-up in the first quarter, caught up, turned it around and finished the first half in a 18-18 tie.
“We got off to a bad stretch in the second quarter when we turned the ball over a lot,” McCool said. “Then we got back on track and started rebounding in the third and fourth quarter.”
Refreshed after halftime, the Tigers went on a 13-16 run to regain the lead and refused to let up.
Hagerstown went into the fourth quarter with a 35-29 edge and held onto the lead at the free throw line. The Tigers added eight points in the fourth quarter on one field goal and 6-of-14 free throws.
The final eight minutes were the Patriots’ best scoring quarter (15 pts.)
“We moved the ball a lot better and got some looks,” McCool said.
Senior Ragen Bias was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points. Stewart was next in line with 15 points – all coming in the final three periods.
Hagerstown also had two in double digit scoring. Juniors Braydon Favorite finished with 12 points and Kadence Roman added 11.
The boys Hagerstown game was reduced to a varsity only match-up due to lack of numbers.
“We get more bodies back and then keep building on that,” McCool said. “The JV has been in quarantine but will be back Tuesday.”
