“That’s the best team I’ve seen all year in 2A. They beat 4A Lawrence Central,” UC coach Scott Gray said following the Lady Patriots’ 77-23 loss to Winchester Dec. 18. “They are quick and long and shoot the ball well and run the floor better than any team I’ve ever seen.”

The win gives the Lady Falcons an unblemished 12-0 overall record and 4-0 in the Tri-Eastern Conference. Union County stands at 5-4 and 1-3 TEC mark.
Knowing the situation, Gray prepared the Lady Patriots before game time.
“What I told them tonight was, just go out and play hard and whatever hap-pens, happens,” he said. “Don’t quit and they didn’t. They kept battling and kept battling.”

Winchester ran up an early 15-0 lead before Lady Patriot Faith Richardson’s pair of free throws broke the ice.

UC trailed 19-4 going into the second quarter and met up with tight Winchester defense that allowed UC’s second field goal before the halftime intermission.

Winchester scored in double digits each quarter (19, 26, 20, 12). UC hit double digits (11 pts.) in the third period.

The Lady Falcons were led by Senior Taylor Hicks (17 pts.) and junior Caitlyn Campbell (16 pts.).

“Our kids are working extremely hard and when Shelby (Hill) comes back, in January or sooner, it will change things for us,” Gray said. “And we’ll be ready for sectional, that’s what we’re shooting for - sectional.”
