State finalist in long jump Jacob Schatzle

It’s fitting that a great junior campaign has landed Jacob Schatzle in the Indiana state track and field finals, hosted Friday at Ben Davis High School.
Schatzle was second only to Center Grove’s Jackson Schott in the regional long jump at Warren Central last Thursday. He landed a 22-4 while Schott edged him at 22-5. Both are in the top 11 of competitors in the state trials; the top 10 will be in the finals beginning at 3 p.m.
Cam Smith placed 11th in shot put, tossing it 46-6.5. Chad Cox was 6th in high jump, topping out at 6 feet even. (Brion Stephens of WC jumped 6-9). The boys 4x800 team of Hunter and Harmon Marshall, Denver Meier and Drew Grant ran 13th in a time of 8:49.83. Grant, Hunter Tschaenn, Tyreke Carr and Meier were 9th in the 4x400 at 3:33.04. The best FC relay went to the 4x100 squad; Schatzle, Tschaenn, Carr and Grant placed 5th in a time of 43.41. Center Grove won at 42.08.
Tschaenn and Schatzle were among the 100 dash competitors; Schatzle was 12th in the prelims at 11.41 while Tschaenn moved into the finals with an 11.21. In the finals, Tschaenn just missed the top three and qualification for state; he was 4th at 11.11 as WC had the two leaders at 10.88 and 10.92.
East Central’s Leo Maxwell placed 2nd in discus at 173-10 and 2nd in shot put at 58-8.75 to put him in the state finals. Teammate Nathan Griffin was 3rd in 300 hurdles (41.18) to advance. Batesville is sending three to the final round: JJ Kuisel was regional champ in the 400 and Gabe Gunter runner-up in high jump. Ben Moster was 4th in the 1600 but his time qualified.
Girls regional
A total of five Franklin County Lady Wildcats were in action last Tuesday night at the Franklin Community track and field regional. Despite great efforts, the postseason ended for the Lady Cats.
“These are top-tier athletes and people,” said Davidson. “They achieve highly academically, in leadership and in community involvement. They have grit and determination.”
Two of the five are departing seniors: Grace Kruthaupt and Lauren Kelley.
Kruthaupt had an unfortunate fall at the end of a sectional hurdles race, breaking her arm in the process; thus, her entries into the regional 100 and 300 hurdles races were not guaranteed.
“After some light practice and doctors’ appointments, she was cleared and ready,” said her coach. “She had every excuse in the world to back down … but she didn’t.”
Her first chance was the 100 hurdles preliminaries. The FC senior cleared every hurdle smoothly and qualified for the finals with her 3rd-fastest time of the year (16.18). The finals brought a chance to qualify for state. Through tight competition, places three to six were separated by about one stride. Kruthaupt was time in sixth, finishing in 15.88; against the odds, she set a new PR and new school record.
“She thrived, broken arm and all,” said Davidson, “and showed an unbelievable amount of courage.”
She’d get one more chance later in the evening with the 300. Kruthaupt won her timed finals heat but had to wait on results from the next heat. Faster times put her 48.79 in 7th place, though this was also a PR and the 2nd-best time in FC history.
“Her transformation in four years has been legendary,” said the coach.
Kruthaupt will continue her track career for Thomas More University.
Kelley competed in the 800, finishing 13th with a time of 2:31.75.
“Though this wasn’t her best result, she is not defined by this one race,” Davidson said. “She’s defined by her character on and off the track. She demanded excellence from me and all the coaches and made this program one of the best in the school.
“She has a full academic scholarship and will develop into a top-notch professional,” he added. “The next athletes at FC will hear about all the hard work and dedication it takes to be Lauren Kelley.”
Kelley and Kruthaupt were also part of the 4x100 team, along with freshman Audrey Harper and sophomore Madison Merritt. The group ran its fastest of the year (51.73), which was good for 8th. The 3rd-place mark was 49.77.
Harper competed in long jump and had three guaranteed jumps; a top-9 mark would give her three more. She was unable to make the finals, ending in 13th with a leap of 14-9.5. Junior Chloe Heffron was in the pole vault field, though starting height was higher than her best prior vault. Trying to reach 8-6, she recorded no height.
“It’s been a blast coaching these young ladies,” said Davidson. “I appreciate all that they’ve done for our team and program. I wish our seniors all the success in their next steps.”
Ellie Lengerich of EC was regional champ in the 800 (2:13.48) and long jump (18-2.75) while taking 3rd in high jump (5-4). The girls state tourney is Saturday at Ben Davis. Greensburg’s Brenner Hanna will compete in both the 1600 and 3200, being 2nd at regional in both. EC’s 4x400 team of Lengerich, Anna Graf, Jorjia Ferguson and Rachel Campbell took 2nd (4:03.58).
