RICHMOND – Already soggy after overnight rainfall, the course at Elks Lodge and Country Club in Richmond became boggier following an early Monday afternoon shower that made sectional conditions tough for area boys golfers.

For Franklin County, the overcast day brought a fifth-place finish and a close to the 2021 campaign. The boys scored 386 as a team, two strokes behind Rushville’s 384 and one ahead of the Hagerstown Tigers.

The final individual to advance to regional from a non-qualifying team was Tri High’s Evan Murphy at 84, eight strokes better than FC’s Adam Kelly; Kelly paced the Wildcats with a 92, including a 42 on the back nine. Sectional champion was Connersville senior Jonah Graham, whose 76 was one stroke lower than Cameron Woods of Union County (77). Cooper Kinney of Connersville came in third with a 78.

The host Red Devils won the team title by scoring a collective 328 and Connersville’s Spartans were next at 342. The Union County Patriots will also compete at the next round after finishing third at 351. Parker Engle of Tri shot 82 and Alex Beatty of Northeastern 83 to advance individually.

Coming in behind Kelly for FC was Peyton McCreary at 94 (46 and 48 splits). Drew Meyer and Austin Hill each carded 100 for the Wildcats and Josh Bauman completed a round of 106.

Behind Hagerstown in the standings were Northeastern (397), Tri (400), Cambridge City Lincoln (417), Centerville (438), Union Modoc (478) and Seton Catholic only had two golfers compete.

The regional is Thursday at The Players Club in Muncie.
